How to make milking more efficient

Wednesday, 12 October 2022

Regardless of the size or breed of your herd, the goal is to make milking more efficient. How can you do this? By getting a cow that is structurally easier to milk.

In April 2022, GENEX published RobotX™ values for all Holstein and Jersey sires on GENEX for the first time. This trait focuses on genetic suitability for milking and suitability for robotic milking units and systems of all types.

As a result of extensive research, genetic selection incorporating RobotX™ values can help you create a next generation that features traits that are critical for easy and efficient milking: ideal udder shape, good leg and hoof placement, optimal milking speed and calm temperament.

What features are included in RobotX™?

Although the RobotX™ trait formula varies slightly between Holstein and Jersey breeds, the traits included in the calculation formula are:

How do you interpret the RobotX™ values?

Just like GENEX’s PregCheck™ fertility index rankings, RobotX™ is set on a base of 100, with higher numbers being more desirable. In other words, 100 is an average. Choosing sires with a value of 100 or higher will help you create cows that are structurally and functionally easier to milk.

Where can I find the RobotX™ bull judgment values?

The GENEX Dairy Bull Search app is your source for genetic information. Within the app, you can view an individual bull’s RobotX™ value on its Production Traits tab. You can also filter bulls by their RobotX™ value (see example below).

The complex selection of these traits on the RobotX™ trait, makes genetic selection easy! This is a convenient way to find a value that results in efficient and easy to milk future generations of cows.
